Mindfulness in the Workplace

Mindfulness practice can stimulate impressive changes in how you think and feel. Imagine the experience of more control over your day while you are also happier and more productive at work. Imagine a sense of focus, ease and contentment. Imagine impacting your neural activation patterns in a way that resembles that of your younger self – more efficient and flexible. Imagine learning skills that can be integrated into your life as it is.

Mindfulness practice helps participants cultivate clear, moment-to moment awareness about what is in front of them and what is happening. This clarity provides the opportunity to respond rather than react. Information and exercises targeted to enhance interpersonal effectiveness will prepare you to expand your influence, and more skillfully approach the inevitable difficult interactions in life.

Mindfulness in the Workplace Training introduces the knowledge, skills and experiences researchers assert will develop more influence, productivity and happiness at work. Mindfulness practice is a catalyst for leadership as it is an evidence-based practice that promotes:

  • High resolution self-awareness is knowing our internal architecture: thoughts, preferences, values, history, intuitions, feelings, body states, strengths, vulnerabilities.  This complex map is the platform for intentional action.
  • Choosing responses or self-regulation is influence over what we pay attention to.  We are constantly turning things on and off, and how we do this is highly associated with the quality of our thinking and well-being.  High mind wandering is associated with unhappiness, and attention is described as the gateway to higher functioning.
  • Communication agility is essential for emotionally rewarding relationships at work and at home.  We are constantly influencing each other by our very presence.  Distressing emotion shrinks cognitive capacity.  We have the capacity to constantly make each other feel a little worse or a little better.  How we interact with each other increases flourishing or contributes to negativity and negativity hangovers.

Dr. Stauffer studied mindfulness at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School, the Insight Meditation Society in MA, and Spirit Rock in Woodacre, CA. She has been a a member of the Illinois MBSR/MBCT Consortium since 2009.

“My work with Dr. Stauffer has given me a clearer understanding of my emotional and psychological make-up.  I am more confident, genuine, and open in my relationships.  Dr. Stauffer encouraged me to think creatively and to have dreams and to pursue them.   I am able to experience and accept a wider range of emotions in myself without fear. As a result, I have a greater capacity to risk, not only in emotional and social interactions, but in my professional work. I embrace a balanced life, and I experience love, purpose, joy and wonder every day.
